Cenotes Near Punta Cana
Hoyo Azul: the iconic Cap Cana cenote
Hoyo Azul is the most photographed cenote in the country and the closest to Punta Cana. The vivid turquoise pool sits at the foot of a 75 ft limestone cliff inside Scape Park. The standard ticket bundles the cenote with the Eco Splash zipline, a Taino cave and a small farm. Most guests spend 3 to 4 hours at the park. Hotel pickup is included in most tour packages from Bavaro and Punta Cana resorts.
Hoyo Claro: the quieter Cap Cana alternative
Hoyo Claro is just a few hundred metres from Hoyo Azul, also inside Scape Park. The water has a similar turquoise color but the pool is smaller and far less crowded. Most Hoyo Azul tours add a 30-minute Hoyo Claro stop on the way out. Pair the two for the best photo day in Cap Cana. The cenote is also accessible to Open Water divers in groups led by Scape Park instructors.
Cueva del Chicho: the Bayahibe cave swim
Cueva del Chicho is a hidden cave with a freshwater swim pool inside Cotubanama National Park, 90 minutes south of Punta Cana via the Coral Highway. The visit involves a 15-minute jungle walk to the cave entrance and a swim inside. Less polished than Scape Park but more authentic. Combine with Cenote Padre Nuestro or pair with a Saona Island stop on a separate day. Tour packages with hotel pickup run 40 to 75 USD.
Build a cenote day from your Bavaro resort
Pickup typically starts at 7:30 to 8:30 am from Bavaro and Punta Cana resort lobbies. The Cap Cana cenotes (Hoyo Azul + Hoyo Claro) are back at your resort by 2 to 3 pm so you can catch the afternoon pool or beach. Cueva del Chicho is a 9 to 10 hour day with the drive south. Sandwich a free pool day between two excursions to recover. Book at least 48 hours ahead in high season (December to March).
Frequently Asked Questions
Which cenote is closest to Punta Cana airport?
Hoyo Azul and Hoyo Claro at Scape Park, both about 25 minutes from PUJ airport. You can technically swing by on the way to your resort if your booking allows but most travelers visit on day two or three of the trip.
Is Hoyo Azul better than the resort pool?
Yes, for one half day. The water color and the cliff backdrop are unique. Most travelers do not want to repeat the experience, so plan it as a single bucket-list visit and use your resort pool for the other days.
Can I combine a Cap Cana cenote with Saona Island in one day?
Not recommended. Saona is a 9 to 10 hour day on its own and the cenote needs at least a half day. Doing both leaves you exhausted with no time to enjoy either. Spread them across two days for a better trip.
