Cenote Diving in the Dominican Republic
Cenote Padre Nuestro, Bayahibe
Padre Nuestro is the most accessible cave dive site in the country. It sits inside Cotubanama National Park, a 30-minute drive from Bayahibe and La Romana. The main chamber is 8 to 12 metres deep with crystal-clear freshwater and dramatic limestone formations. Open Water divers can join guided cavern dives that stay close to the entry. Full cave certification opens the deeper passages. Local operators in Bayahibe and Dominicus offer half-day packages with two dives.
Laguna Dudu underwater cave, Cabrera
Laguna Dudu has a small but dramatic underwater cave system that connects two lakes. The visibility is excellent and the cave walls have unique speleothems. Cavern-trained divers can access the connecting passage with a local guide. The site is busy with swimmers above water so most operators schedule dives for early morning. North Coast operators run from Cabarete and Sosua.
Certifications and prep
For cavern dives near the cenote entry you need a current Open Water Diver certification with at least 10 logged dives. For full cave dives you need PADI Cave or TDI Cave certification. Bring your certification card and logbook. Local operators provide tanks and weights but most divers bring their own regulator and BCD if traveling for a dedicated dive trip. A wetsuit (3 mm) is recommended even in summer due to the cold freshwater.
Combine cenote diving with reef diving
Bayahibe and Catalina Island offer some of the best Caribbean reef diving in the country. A typical 4-day dive trip combines two days of reef dives off Catalina with a half-day cenote dive at Padre Nuestro and a North Coast extension to Laguna Dudu. This pattern gives you the variety of saltwater reef and freshwater cave in one trip without the overcrowding of Mexico.
